Accents and patterns allow you to show off personality in a subtle yet impactful way. The key is knowing how to mix materials and colours so the design feels intentional rather than chaotic. Here are our top tips.

Follow the 70/20/10 Rule

Interior designers recommend allocating 70% of your space to a dominant neutral color, 20% to a secondary hue and 10% to an accent. This approach keeps bold elements under control. Use warm wood planks for the majority of the floor, introduce a complementary colour in a small area rug or border, and finish with a contrasting tile inlay for drama.

Create Focal Points

Accent tiles are a great way to highlight a fireplace, kitchen island or entryway. Checkerboard or geometric mosaics draw the eye and can be bordered by plainer wood or stone. Just ensure the colours tie back to the main floor to avoid a jarring transition.

Mix Materials Thoughtfully

Pair wood planks with encaustic cement tiles or natural stone to delineate zones within an open concept layout. Use slender metal or stone borders to separate materials cleanly. In bedrooms or media rooms, layer patterned carpet over hardwood for softness and interest.

Play with Direction & Scale

Changing the direction of wood planks or using herringbone layouts around a border can subtly accent an area without introducing new colours. Choose large‑format tiles for expansive spaces and small mosaics for compact rooms.
